Island Enterprises - How Our Plaques Are Made

(PA) - Pattern Preparation

Before items/orders are started in cutting. Pattern are prepared as guideline for the cutting
workers. Pattern are first drafted with the aid of the computer then printed. Printed pattern
are then transferred to stiffer materials (hard cardboard to thin plywood).
(CU) - Cutting Preparation/Procedure
Pattern is now traced on wood or marine plyboard. Wood are cut with the aid of a band saw
and sanded down with the use of a sanding machine. A plainer is also used to sand down
large cuts of wood.

(CA) - Carving

Carving stage is where the logo images and letters are carved on the plaque. Carvers use
special tools to shape and carve the desired shape and image.
(VA) - Varnish - Sanding
After carving, wooden plaques are forwarded to varnish section. Items are sanded first
to smoothen the surface edges.

(VA) - Varnish - Wood stain

Once the items are smoothen. These are now applied with the the requested woodstain
(Brown Mahogany or Black Walnut). Then applied with sanding sealer.
(AP) - Artist Plaque
Artist Plaque consists of Plaques, Tail Flashes and Torii Gates. After basecoat (for tail flashes)
and wood stain (for plaques) is applied. The requested color for the plaque follows. Manual
and airbrush as well as stencils are used in this stage.

(QC) - Quality Control

Quality Control checks the every stage of production, starting in line drawings. As every stage
is completed, all items will pass thru QC. QC will counter check the item againts the order
form before it is transferred to the next section.
(OP) - Overprint/Final Coat
After photo approval, all approved items will be forwarded to final coat.
Below are the different types of final coat:
  • Flat Lacquer
  • Gloss then Poly Coat
  • Semi-Gloss

(PK) - Packing

Once the items are properly dried after the final coat is applied, they now proceed
to packing. Before packaging, website photos are taken first and the items are given
a final check versus the order form. Items are boxed, styrofoam, wrap brown paper
and foam. This is to secure the item during shipping.
